Justice For Workers Deaths Italian Style

Three years after a devastating fire in an Italian plant of the German company Thyssen Krupp resulted in seven deaths, top managers of the firm have been sentenced to imprisonment, with the maximum being for 16 years and six months .

The German steel plant manager was found guilty of deliberate killing and must spend for 16 years and six months in prison.

The seven workers died due to sustaining heavy burns as a result of an explosion on 6 December 2007. According to statement of witnesses the fire extinguishers were empty and the emergency telephone did not work.

For the first time in the Italian law history a company manager has been condemned to prison after a deadly industrial accident.

The remaining five accused received imprisonments for 13 years and six months as well as for ten years and ten months. With this level of punishment for the head of the company and fellow accused the court followed the request of the public prosecutor's office.

The tragedy strengthened the discussion already going on in Italy around health and security at work. Trade unionists and members of the victims applauded the judgment as a large victory for justice.
